The New York Dolls are going to headline and salute one of rocks most memorable frontmen at the 7th annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash. The event will take place this Saturday at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza, NYC.May 19 marks the date that Joey Ramone would have turned 56. In the last seven years, after his battle with lymphoma ended (April 15, 2001), a birthday celebration was held in h...

This Is Ridiculous

Most of this CD does not perhaps sound as you would expect the Dolls to sound, but that don't make it bad.I like this bluesy tune. It sounds like it's being sung by Tom Waits, and has a swampy almost Bo Diddley beat, but played the way John Fogerty would play it.If that isn't a strange description, I don't know what is. But me not being real familiar with the old Dolls sound, that's what it fir...

The New York Dolls are touring again

This was sort of exciting…I got asked to write a bigger longer show preview for Philadelphia Weekly last week, on the New York Dolls show. Here it is:Too Much Too Late Rock critic Richard Meltzer never wrote anything funnier than his account of a mid-’70s food fight with the New York Dolls, David Johansen and Meltzer flinging handfuls of macaroni salad at one another at a Mercury party, leath

New York Dolls, MIA, Twilight Sad Join Siren Festival Line-Up

Free summer music doesn’t get much better than the Siren Festival, held every year on the boardwalk at Coney Island in the heat of summer and the roar of the cyclone. This year's edition, on July 21st, has a special poignance because developers have finally noticed that Coney Island is, duh, on the water, and are planning massive gentrification and upscaling that may quash things like Siren fr.

1. Dolly Parton, "Jolene." This oft-covered early hit for Parton is wonderful, but I continue to wonder how a woman so clearly dedicated to making the most of herself would write a song like this one. In real life, I imagine Dolly kicking Jolene's ass.2. The New York Dolls, "Looking for a Kiss." If you're only going to watch one video here, this is your extra-special goody. Of course, if you ca...

So. Last night I saw Little Steven's "Rolling Rock and Roll Show Tour":http://www.rollingrockandrollshow.com/, which featured Frantic, The Charms, The Chesterfield Kings, Supersucker, and, of course, the Dolls. And they had go-go dancers.I think every show should have go-go dancers. This was the first show in many years where I made my way towards the front of the stage. I've seen seated shows, I'v

Thoughts On The New York Dolls

When I saw the New York Dolls, in 1973, at a now defunct club sandwiched between strip joints and dirty magazine stores on Broadway, I was confused. Up until the Dolls, the musicians making the rock and roll that I liked - from the Beatles, Stones and Dylan to Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Grateful Dead and Country Joe and the Fish - knew how to play. The debut album: New York DollsB...

1. Dolly Parton, "Jolene." Given that country songs can be maudlin, emotionally disturbed, that is to say, honest, I don't know why I'd single this one out as particularly odd. But despite my impression of Dolly Parton as a strong woman in charge of her career who made a name for herself and her art by doing it "her own way," this song paints a picture of a very different kind of woman. She's d...

I notice that this is my third post in a row featuring a song with "jungle" in the title. Happenstance, oddly enough.Anyway, right now, right this minute, The New York Dolls are playing in NYC. "Stranded In The Jungle" is introduced by Mr. Electricity, Don Kirshner, who all but apologizes for what we are about to see. It's true The Cadets' original is superior, a little mayhem-filled ...
