I am a sucker for almost any song that extols the joys (and eventual sorrows) of sharing life with a dog. This is one example – from the debut album by Nellie McKay, possibly my favorite of all of her songs. Nellie is an unreconstructed animal lover, very talented and, unfortunately, resistant to anyone trying to edit her output which, IMHO, she sorely needs. She left Columbia because they want.
Coming clean here, Nellie McKay and I used to have a professional association that ended rather badly. Nonetheless, I always thought she was wildly talented. There really isn't much she can't do: she's an endlessly inventive songwriter, a singer of much charm and sensitivity, a gifted musician and arranger. She very well may never want to speak to me, but that doesn't stop me from being a fan.H...
It’s time. I’ve been putting this off far too long. Deep breath. OK, go: I am in love with Nellie McKay. And I’m not sure how I feel about this. First of all, I’m straight. Second, I feel guilty about my crush. Not because I have already given my heart to another, but because she’s really not my type. Yet, I’ve still fallen for her, and hard, and that scares me. This feels too foreign.
I actually do listen to music! Really, I do. Funny how Mog-O-Matic makes one self-conscious. Just wanted y'all to know my computer is acting funny so I currently cannot listen to music from it. Whenever my iTunes is open, it likes to "think" for extended periods of time while I stare at it blankly with a gaping jaw. So I dug out the old portable CD player from 1997, featuring G-protection! How ...
Yep. Just scouring my blog for things that belong in a Mog. I won't overdo it tonight, but I wanted to share a video. I don't feel like I need to say much about this performance, except that if you're not at least impressed, well, maybe you're an asshole. (c:Behold:Did I mention my love affair with the pianoforte?
dang dang dang. i have had nellie mckay's debut cd for awhile now, but for some reason it wasn't till today that i could say, wow this is brilliant. in fact i woke up with one of the songs in my head. anyway, here is a live performance of a fave song. sigh...
It's almost a year later, but thankfully we can finally hear Nellie McKay's Pretty Little Head. I made a little trip to the record shop on Sunday (also picking up Beck's The Information - so we could play with the stickers - and Hole's Live Through This) with McKay high on the priorities list. Seeing her live last month - performing several songs both from Head and her debut, got us ridiculou...

I hate to harp on Nellie McKay, but the long awaited (by me) MERKIN video has just been released. I can't give you details, but I lived in the same uterus as the bearded one. I was there first. My favorite part: the dance break.
Hey all (or whoever reads this anyway...) haven't written lately, been extremely busy, but just thought I would jot down a couple of things. First of all... I was bored the other day so I downloaded the Showtime series "Weeds" from iTunes. If you haven't had a chance to see it, I highly recommend it... very cute! I believe it is coming out on DVD fairly soon (the first season). The theme son...
If I had you... great song, great voice from her recent Daytrotter session, "he New Yorker is a songstress who cannot hide her coat closet full of idiosyncrasies and oddities. They are ever present as her songs range from the Liza of Broadway lights, the soft-shoeing of some burgundy wine cabaret, to strange ukulele odes, to musical shakes at prose and comedy, to keen observations about men, wo...
It's been awhile since I've been active on here! School's been pretty hectic with finals and whatnot, but now I've only got one more paper left, two weeks before summer classes start and likely a little longer than that before my job starts. I'll have nothing but time! (Literally...).Anyway, I've been getting into blues dancing lately which is incredibly fun (and sexy when done well). Unfor...
Here's another top-notch artist to make your head go berserk. Nellie Mckay's flair reminds me of The Dresden Dolls melding to the likes of Regina Spektor and her song, 'David' captivated me upon hearing the first note. /-Nellie MckayNellie McKay (born Nell Marie McKay on 13 April 1982) is an English-born American singer-songwriter, actress, and former stand-up comedian, noted for her critica...
"If you keep your opinions and knowledge to yourself, it doesn’t change anything." McKay talks to PopMatters about her current projects, social activism, and philosophy of life in general.
