Six and a half years later, Comes a Time finally was the Neil Young album for the millions of fans who had loved Harvest, an acoustic-based record with country overtones and romantic, autobiographical lyrics, and many of those fans returned to the fold, enough to make Comes a Time Young's first Top Ten album since Harvest. He signaled the album's direction with the leadoff track, "Goin' Back," and its retrospective theme augmented with an orchestral backup and the deliberate beat familiar from his number one hit "Heart of Gold." Of course, Young remained sly about this retrenchment. "I feel like goin' back," he sang, but added, "back where there's nowhere to stay." Doubtless he had no intention of staying with this style, but for the length of the album, melodies, love lyrics, lush arrangements, and steel guitar solos dominated, and Young's vocals were made more accessible by being paired with Nicolette Larson's harmonies. Larson's own version of Young's "Lotta Love," released shortly after the one heard here, became a Top Ten hit single. Other highlights included the reflective "Already One," which treats the unusual subject of the nature of a divorced family, the ironic "Field of Opportunity," and a cover of Ian Tyson's folk standard "Four Strong Winds" (a country Top Ten hit for Bobby Bare in 1965).

Headin' home for the Christmas, so I'll probably be on MOG very little in the next two weeks. As it happens, Four Strong Winds just popped up on the shuffle in iTunes. I swear, sometimes iTunes knows what song I need to listen to. It's altogether right that it's the last song I listen to before heading to Alberta.Merry Christmas everyone!

Neil Young tells the story in the video, that back when he was a teen, this song was in a juke box in his favorite hangout and he would play it over and over. At the time, he said, he thought it was the most beautiful song ever written.

What a beautiful song by Ian Tyson. I love Ian's original rendition of this classic but my first exposure was Neil Young's cover from his Comes A Time album. I learned to play the song by ear back then and it still is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed hearing Neil Young tell the story about his first exposure to Ian's original on the Heart Of Gold DVD. Absolutely a stunning live performan...

Look Out For My Love

This song is on the 1978 Neil Young album Comes A Time and for me it stands out from the rest of the tracks because it departs from the highly polished Nashville sound he created and is instead recorded with Crazy Horse. Linda Ronstadt actually had a radio hit with her cover back then however she left out some lyrics (hydraulic wipers pumping till the window glistens...) on hers.

Four Strong Winds is a classic song written by Canadian folk legend Ian Tyson way back in 1961. My first exposure to the song was from Neil Young's Comes A Time album (1978). Made quite an impression on a 17 year old kid. My cover is inspired by Neil Young's cover and my friend Jane has joined me to sing some awesome harmony vocals. Thanks again to Jane for her awesome singing.
