Mudhoney's leap to the majors did little to blunt the group's trademark sludge-slinging sound -- "Blinding Sun" and its accompanying LP, Piece of Cake, maintained the savage melodicism and dwarf-matter heaviness of their halcyon Sub Pop records, albeit with improved production and an expanded sonic palette (Mark Arm even plays piano!). Still, there's something missing -- the sheer visceral rush of Mudhoney's earlier efforts is gone, and though it's far from unlistenable, "Blinding Sun" is only marginally better than something one of the band's legion of grunge imitators might have delivered on their very best day. The B-sides aren't any better, likewise failing to capture the spirit of days past.
