AMG Review of Bent Pages

All Music GuideThis collection of early Mono Men singles and B-sides captures the group at its roughest, which is an attribute. The Mono Men have always played up their adherence to '60s garage-rock, but quite often the group showcases a much heavier blues-rock sound. Perhaps it's the covers of the Sonics' "The Witch" and Billy Childish's "Catalina" and "Lie Detector" that lead to such an assertion, but even originals like "Daylight" and "Right Now" exhibit a rawer energy that was buried deep in the mix of Mono Men studio albums. The covers, however, are the central aspect of the album, and The Wipers' "Over The Edge" is the most blistering.
