Charley Patton was born near Edwards, Mississippi some time between 1881 and 1890. His birth year is uncertain as is his parentage. He was either the son of Bill Patton, his mother's husband,or Henderson Chatmon, a fiddler himself and patriarch of a clan of mostly musicians.
