Top 10: Albums Worth the Wait

Artist:
Album:

The release of the long awaited Chinese Democracy by Guns N' Roses this weekend got me thinking about albums that we had to wait a long time for, but were also wholly worth the wait once we finally got to hear them. When you really think about it there aren't too many of these. Sure there are a lot of bands that had huge gaps between good albums, but very few went on long hiatuses and managed to

Wow, what an incredible night, truly awesome in terms of the shows I have been to this year, which regrettably have not been as many as I usually shoot for. But on Friday, Roger Miller, Clint Conley, and Peter Prescott took the stage to a sudden swell of raucous cheers at the Paradise. Tonight was their second night here, the previous show highlighting their Signals, Calls, and Marches EP. For this 2nd bill, they would be showcasing the seminal album Vs. in all... MORE

Mission of Burman Live in Portland

So far, the double 0s have been prime time for the reuniting of ‘70s and ‘80s punk bands. Partially because just enough time has passed for original fans to become nostalgic, partially because today’s generation wants to feel part of movement they missed and partially because bands like Gang of Four, My Blood Valentine, The Pixies and Mission of Burma want to know what it would feel like to play again after all these years.

And so far, there’s been few let downs. Take M... MORE

Sunday: Under The Covers .....

(43)
Blog post image previewOriginally recorded by James Newell Osterberg, Jr and The Stooges for their album Fun House in 1970. It appears on side 2 first track. Between the original and the cover, I find it hard to decide which I like better. I myself don't have the original, maybe a kind soul will toss into comments. Props to dachmo for reminding me again how utterly cool Mission Of Burma really is. Enjoy!

Blog post image previewRoger Miller, guitarist of the legendary Boston based, post-punk/no-wavers Mission Of Burma has posted a classified add offering guitar lessons via Craigslist.com. Miller formally studied piano, tuba and composition and was a major contributor of the song writing detail for Mission Of Burma. The group was originally formed in 1979, the early days of post punk. They found moderate success and were primarily known for the live shows. They broke up in 1983, which some hav... MORE

_IMHO_ This is more of a love fest than a war ... but that's alright because I'm a lover not a fighter. :) In light of that, for this one I'm throwing the notion out the window that the artist has to have been a true punk pioneer ... this track is from a live show this year (couldn't find a video) and it rocks, so there!

Mission Of Burma are one of my top favorite bands, and one of the best bands I've seen live, but it took me a little while to get around to watching Not A Photograph. It documents the resurrection of Mission of Burma in 2002, as well as their birth and early days in the 1978-83 Boston.

Anyone with even a passing interest in truly seminal post-punk should definitely check out the documentary (NetFlix has it). There's some really good archival gig footage and footage of the f... MORE

Guess what...I went to see Mission of Burma AGAIN!!!

Mission of Burma Live in BostonPearl StreetNorthampton, MA USASeptember 21, 2007by Jennifer Kelly When is a reunion show not a reunion show?Maybe when a legendary post-punk band — out of commission for a couple of decades and then miraculously back — decides that it no longer has to play its best-known songs in the course of a night. (That's right, a Mission of Burma show with no "That's When I Reach for My Revolver", no "Photograph".) Maybe when said band sticks to its ki... MORE

This is my first time going to a show where an album is being performed in its entirety. This has been a popular trend lately, as Metallica, Built to Spill, and Sonic Youth have recently performed albums. I find the concept interesting. Doesn’t it take the magic out of setlist surprises? [...]

Extremely cool punk video archive

Click here and here to get to 40-odd vintage punk (and post-punk, power pop, and new wave) live performances, shot mostly (a handful of exceptions aside) in Boston, mostly between 1979-1983. (Sorry, the videos aren't in embeddable form.) Make sure you don't limit your viewing to Mission Of Burma, Gang Of Four, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, and XTC.
