I'm a total pushover for South African female singing groups, especially the old-timers like the Dark City Sisters and the Skylarks. This is a gem, from the late Fifties. It reminds me of a round. Miriam's voice is terrific, with just the right breezy, jazzy feel, but it's the interweaving of her line with the other singers' that gives this cut its abundant magic. Miriam Zenzi Makeba was born in Johanesburg in 1932, the daughter of a Xhosa man, who died when she was six, and a Swazi traditional healer. First singing with the Manhattan Brothers, she was one of the stars of the first black South African stage musical "King Kong" in 1959 - she played Joyce, the girlfriend of the male lead played by Nathan Mdledle of the Manhattan brothers.
