Well, I made it. It wasn't really my first concert in 18 years but close enough, and thoroughly enjoyable.
The show was at a small church in Metuchen, New Jersey, sponsered by a local independent bookstore, the Raconteur. When I bought the ticket, the guy on the phone was really nice (at first there was a 2 ticket minumum, so I said "Ok, give me two." He said "do you need two?" I said "NO"., so he let me buy just one.) Anyway, it was definately a great opportunity... MORE

Maybe my wife has been home too long with the bambino, away from adult contact, but she emailed me this recipe from: http://www.recipesource.com/main-dishes/meat/pork/spam/00/rec0004.html You will note the lack of calorie and fat count. The piece de resistance are the cornflakes. Goes well with a good Aussie shiraz, I would imagine. Bon apetit moggers! The original Punk Rock Karaoke is a touring cast of musicians from some very notable punk bands playing your favorites, allowing common folk, as well as some famous names, to take the stage and sing a ditty or two. These performances are recorded in the new Punk Rock Karaoke documentary, which was released this week via MVD. Better yet, each song features the words at the bottom of the screen so you can follow along at home! This is great news for me — I'm tired of singing... MORE

Everyone knows Ian MacKaye (well, probably not on a personal level, nor the biblical sense.) Indies love the work he's done in Fugazi and The Evens, while punk fans indulge in all of his old bands.
Minor Threat was THE best band that Ian was part of, period. The songs are short, fast, and notoriously pissed off (pretty pioneering for a band that existed in a time when hair metal was the big thing... god I hate the 80s sometimes).

So if you want an understand of just how old punk has gotten, a Minor Threat member is now a lawyer. Lyle Preslar, who was younger than the class of 2010 while playing guitar for a seminal punk band (boy do I feel old), has just graduated from Rutgers University School of Law—Newark. Apparently, he's won an award for music law writing, and—get this—he's married to a VH1 executive. In case you were wondering how drastic a change this is from his youth, that's Lyle in the ... MORE
Like so many of us, MOG has been a godsend, a haven where I have found people who share a similar passion for music. Sure, we all don't like the SAME music, but the fact alone that we're all passionate about music makes MOG so exciting. As a result, I cannot count the number of times that MOGgers have shared their frustrations that the other people in their lives don't quite understand that passion.Examples:"I was lucky if they knew who Faith No More or Stone Roses were ... My punk experience started while 12, living in Orange County, California. All the older boys were suddenly listening to Rodney on the ROQ and I was confused and frightened by the furious noises I heard (Circle Jerks, Germs, Black Flag). In fact, it wasn't until I was sixteen that I finally listened to Minor Threat and thought, "This isn't scary at all; in fact, I kinda like it!" Thus began my short, unfortunate, hardcore phase.
The soundtrack:
I decided to skip the way too obvious "Out of Step" and found this lovely live nugget, with a cover of Wire's "12XU" followed by "Small Man Big Mouth".
And doesn't this look like the most fun show ever? I wish I could have seen a show like this.
1) I've heard Sufjan Stevens, the Decemberists, and a few other indie acts that get a lot of support here, and they just don't SING for me. Sorry, I tried, honest. 2) I've not yet delved into past inspirations like Billie Holliday and Etta James. I like what I've heard, just been busy catching up with newer stuff. 3) I haven't been to a concert since summer 2004. I could go to more, really, it's only 3 hours to Lawrence. No excuses. 4) Most of my posts are polls, bec... MORE
