Mogstars: 6/10 It's hard to get through a Mercury Rev review without coming across certain words - dream-like, whimsical, fanciful… every word that can convey delicate beauty of the band's meandering psychedelica is almost destined to crop up. After18 years, you'd have thought the writers of the world could have come up with something different to say, but in reality Rev's sound is so indescrib.
Mercury Rev's landmark 1991 album Yerself Is Steam is being re-issued as a three-disc 'Special Edition,' and you can listen to "Chasing Bee," a track off it, that demonstrates what all the raves back in the day were about.
I had two new experiences last night: having dinner at Yakitori Boy, and seeing Mercury Rev live.Well, at least one of those is transcendant. This is not to say that Mercury Rev doesn't give its audience a solid and empassioned performance, with lead singer David Baker appropriately swooping his arms in the general direction of other band members. There was the customary visual projects behind t...
Took some finding but I found my favourite cover of this song... it's a bit crackled as the record was a tad scratched (I think I remember finding it alone under my bed once).. anyway... a pretty rare song.. and to me the scratches make it more intresting :)
The psychedelic Upstate New Yorkers in Mercury Rev focus on a cat with butterfly wings and a flying elephant (who can shoot fireworks out of his trunk) in their video for Snowflake Midnight 's "Butterfly's Wing." But while the old "butterfly effect" saying uses China as an example, this clip focuses on a fantastical Japanese landscape complete with rice paper boats and jellyfish, twisty tree b...
Another dream context song, this one from very early on. My memory is that I had this dream about 3-4 years old, but something tells me that I might have had it at about 17, dreaming that I had it at 3 years old. As usual, I have no idea what the connection between the song and the dream is, it just is.I'm not even going to write the dream down, it's just a dream. It involves another large, spo...
What an awesome way to start the day before my birthday. Two new remixes from two stellar artists end up in my inbox, remixed by two of my current favorite remixers/performers/disco savants — Fujiya & Miyagi and Friendly Fires, each of whom have recently released albums which shine rather brightly of their own accord. The [...]
"Senses On Fire" was the first single to be taken from Mercury Rev's new album, their seventh, which released last month and marked the return of a reinvigorated Mercury Rev. They are due to release their next single from the album on November 17th, and here's where it gets good. The Rev will also release a special 12" remix package featuring two fantastic remixes by Isan and Carlos Anthony M...
Less than 48 hours ago, Mercury Rev's "Butterfly's Wing " took us on a psychedelic trek through a Japanese landscape stocked with rice paper boats and jellyfish, twisty tree branches, dragonflies, kindly whales, and flower pedal rainstorms. Following that Japanese theme -- at least in name -- Fujiya & Miyagi have offered up a remix of Snowflake Midnight 's bombastic first single "Senses On Fire...

because of it's sheer beauty. It is a haunting, introspective sonic masterpiece that builds slowly to a psychedelic crescendo. A song to be savored alone on a rainy afternoon when the world is far away.
