Originally released prior to their 2007 Barsuk debut, Friend and Foe, Menomena's Wet and Rusting EP (on Film Guerrero) contains three versions of the title cut (album, remix, and acoustic), as well as three tracks that don't show up on the full-length: the light and quirky "Walking," the fantastically spacy "Polo" (which has the singers calling out forlornly, "Marco...I come home to you"), and the harmony-laden "Gay A." All three of these new songs fit much in the Friend and Foe vein -- with their layered, looped guitars, the intrusive saxophone, the repetitive, slightly offbeat lyrics contributed by all three of Menomena's members -- in fact, all three could have easily been included on the album, which means that the EP is definitely worthwhile for fans of that record, or that band in general, and the fact that it shows off the versatility of "Wet and Rusting" is just an added bonus.

I've been listening to a ton of new music lately. First I have a friend who's expanding my musical horizons into some new genres, as well as pointing out artists in indie rock I have egregiously overlooked, such as Wilco. Now I know that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is amazing. Then there's been my usual search through the blogs for something new and exciting, and my biggest discovery on that front ...

Here's my belated opinion of Menomena's excellent new album Friend and Foe, out since January on Barsuk."Friend and Foe sounds like pop songs put through a blender for a few seconds, great slippery chunks of melody whacked to varying sized bits and discontinuously abutting outsized drum beats, brash piano chords and ska-town squawks of saxophone. There are moments of achingly pure pop that floa...

They played at this really cool venue called Cafe Du Nord which has two stages, one dowstairs & one on the main level. Lots of gorgeous wood in the downstairs space & a great intimate venue. There were two other bands that played befo...
