My wife and I happened to be in Chicago when Earth day arrived and it was actually her who noticed a free concert going on at the Chicago Zoo. I was excited to hear that Me'Shell was going to be there. This would be the first time I caught her playing live. We got to the Zoo quite early to see all the awesome animals they have there...if you didn't know, the zoo is free and is a great spot to take your young ones. There were a bunch of vendors there giving away free ... MORE

Blog post image preview Meshell Ndegeocello - The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams (Decca, 2007) 9 out of 10 The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams is the finest recording of R&B/jazz musician Meshell Ndegeocello's career. Previewed on an EP called The Article 3 from 2006, her seventh and latest LP delivers on every promise of that release. Ndegeocello's first two records can be defined by a contemporary mid-'90s sound with a hip hop spirit and a defiant edge, anchored by her sultry... MORE

Me'shell Ndegeocello

Artist:
Album: Peace Beyond Passion
(26)
Blog post image preview At different times when I feel a little down, or need some inspiration, I turn to this disc, and more specifically to this song. There are other outstanding tracks on the disc. Me'shell's music is so heartfelt and she brings some incredible musicians with her. I think Peace Beyond Inspiration reminds me of old Gil Scott Heron music at times. Perhaps he had some influence on her, not sure. Anyway, hope you enjoy this tune as much as I do.

It is SO on ...

(38)
Blog post image preview I'm running an older Mac PowerBook as my main computer. The unit is fine, but when laptops get older (i.e. > 2.5 years), things begin to break down. My optical drive (i.e. DVD burner) has been dead for about a year now, but it isn't worth the $400 or so to have Apple fix it. The problem is the drive has been out for about a year, which means I haven't loaded any new music into my iTunes software in about a year. I have stacks and stacks of beats and sounds that never hav... MORE

Cookie: An Anthropological Mixtape: Outstanding Album

Artist:
Album: Cookie: An Anthropological Mixtape
It may not need to be said again here (because I know you all really, really GOT DOWN to her John Cougar duet on Van Morisson's "Wild Nights,") but Me'Shell is a thermonuclear BADA$$ on the electric bass. I remember growing up in DC in the 80s, she would show up now and then and sit in with my buddies in Circus Mind (extra f'ing credit if you remember them...), and just DESTROY. Anyway, after Madonna signed her in '92 or '93 she had a couple fast hits, but decided to go... MORE
