All Music GuideThe 1962 Maynard Ferguson Orchestra performs five Don Menza arrangements/compositions, plus two by Don Rader and one apiece from Mike Abene and Don Sebesky on this well-rounded LP. None of the originals caught on, but there are plenty of fine solos from the leader/trumpeter, Menza on tenor, altoist Lanny Morgan and pianist Abene; plus, the rhythm section is really pushed by drummer Rufus Jones. All of this enjoyable music has since been reissued in Mosaic's ten-CD Maynard Ferguson on Roulette box set.
