Matmos - Supreme Balloon
(Matador, 2008)
9 out of 10 Supreme Balloon is a Disneyland of synthesized music, its listener given a choice of many lands in which to play — electro-funk, house, Baroque, classic video game, minimalism, and more — with an overall architecture designed for fun, harmless thrills and the eating of color-striped unicorn lollipops. I won't pretend to know what most of the synthesizers featured on the album do, so I won't name any of them. Sufficie... MORE

Matmos is back ... maxing out their synthesizers : 100% This time M.C Schmidt & Drew Daniel hold back their urges to sample the universe {no sounds of bible pages turning, liposuction surgery, dogs barking, cards shuffling, and acupuncture tools here} In fact, a microphone wasn't even used during the creation of the new album : Supreme Balloon but one heck of a happy helium-filled hula -

I found 2 great interviews today when I was surfing around my 2 fave UK music sites. One features The Cool Kids talking with Hattie Collins about life, music and the difference between their hometown Chicago and Hattie's UK home. Hattie is such a fantastic writer and this interview is a great read: The Cool Kids and Hattie Collins on RWD Mag The Cool Kids:
The other is with experimental electronica duo Matmos. They discuss their new album at leng... MORE

It's been difficult trying to find more info on what Matmos is up to these days. Like I said yesterday, the east coast is getting their turn with Matmos' magnificent electronic experiments ever since the duo moved from SF to Baltimore. Well, I finally found the definitive word on what's new, thanks to Prefix Mag. The electronic musicians will release a new album on May 6th via Matador. The new release is titled Supreme Balloon and features the song "Rainbow Flag." Check ... MORE

Matmos haven't played together as much since transferring to the East Coast; focusing instead on side projects (like Soft Pink Truth). But today I found a video of a Matmos performance in B-more, MD February 9th and 2 shows in NYC at the end of February. Their B-more set was minimal and ambient but it looks like it was a stimulating environment that they created:
The electronic musicians relocated to B-more from San Fran, so I suppose the east coast will be ... MORE

"THE MATMOS SIGNAL PHASES FROM WEST COAST TO EAST COAST Though rumors and mutterings have been circulating on discussion boards and such, it’s time to come clean on the official Matmos site about an earth-shattering switcheroo: as of August, we are moving from San Francisco, California to Baltimore, Maryland. That’s right, we’re leaving our hearts in The City By The Bay and trucking our enormous mountain of moldering possessions to, er, another city by a Bay. In h... MORE

Matmos are M.C.Schmidt and Drew Daniel, a fascinating electronica duo from San Francisco. I had briefly mentioned them in a previous post about Herbert/Matthew Herbert because they have worked w/him due to their similar interests in incorporating recorded body sounds in their music. This cd of Matmos incorporates recordings of surgical procedures being done on humans(one of the duos fathers is a plastic surgeon who allowed them to sit in on his surgeries). Here's their v... MORE

A Musical Enigma
In a recent tribute to mathematician Alan Turing, electronic music duo Matmos uses the sounds produced by an Enigma machine.
Daniel: ... There's this mantra, "every noise has a note." It's basically true. Even the Enigma machine is in a particular key. Martin came up with a piano part, and then thought, well, let's make it more enigmatic by encrypting his notes. Why encrypt the piano?
Daniel: It was about confronting people with the impenetra... MORE

Saw them a few months back at Yerba Buena in SF when they performed with Kronos. It was something else!
