NPR is webcasting tonight from the 9:30 Club featuring Mates of State with Black Kids co-headlining the bill. The music of Mates of State has always been playfully innocent and unabashedly upbeat. You all probably totally know that Jason and Kori aka the so-cute-it-makes-you-puke indie pop duo Mates Of State are heading out on a long tour, co-headlining dates across the US with Floridian upstarts Black Kids. But now comes excellent news...
I've been a quiet fan of Mates of State since my days at university. Anecdotally speaking I discovered their music around the same time I started listening to Yo La Tengo, not that it matters. Anyway, for the past few years Mates of State have been sitting quietly off center on my radar screen. I've listened to each of their albums a couple of times through, I've been pleased with their soun...
Mates Of State: Rearrange Us *rating* 5.3*This two person review is by Sage T. and Ethan E.*EE: So we've got the new Mates of State here eh? Why does it seem like just yesterday their new album came out....and then the last one before it. Not that they've grown tiresome...i guess I just can't believe it's already Mates of State time.ST: Yup...they release albums like clockwork, and not a r...
That new mates of state album is really good. I really liked all of the new stuff they played when i saw them in houston back in december. I finallly got my own copy this evening and i must say, it rulz. I also really like their cover of Nico's "These Days" as well. Aside from the good tunes, Austin is frozen tonight, it's weird, because this is Texas, this never happens here.
I highly recommend these guys next time they come through your neighborhood...Great great music and a large sound from two people! Love the vocal harmonies. They mostly did their new catalog with many oldies that I did not know (need to buy more records I guess)...There was a little "Crazy" (Gnarles Barkley) tease in between "Like U Crazy" that was very fun...and the encore was a Kenny Loggins ...
concert review: Mates of State, Judgement Day @ Lee's Palace (Toronto, Ontario), August 4, 2008On first impressions, the pairing of 'self-proclaimed' string-metal trio Judgement Day with the rambunctious keyboards/drums indiep pop of Mates of State would seem like an odd combination. Ok, maybe the only time the pairing made sense was when the string section(violin/viola) of Judgement Day joined...

I know, it sounds like a good problem to have, but I have too much music. My iPod, an 80gb, is almost filled to the brim, chocked full of musical goodness, old stuff and new, and that is where my problem begins.I forget to listen to the new stuff. When I am at work, where I get most of my listening done, I settle in to work, scroll through my iPod and draw a complete blank on what I should listen...
