[Marvin Gaye - Anger (Extended Mix, Alternate Take with Marcus Miller) / 5:55]
There is a bird that sings only when its love is lost. The echo of distress serves as a beacon for the loved one to find its way back.
Edward Hopper, Room In New York, 1932 - Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery
Falling in or falling out, love is such a dangerous feeling that it inevitably causes pain and suffering. While some people will collapse and wallow in self-pity, the artist has this abili... MORE

25 years ago, Michael Jackson's Thriller was released--well at least it is if you trust the fact that iTunes has just made available the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of the album. It's somewhat ironic that, during the broadcast of of Mowtown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever, Michael Jackson unveiled his signature move: The irony? Thriller wasn't a Mowtown record. For comparison and contrast purposes, I give you Marvin Gaye's performance from that ... MORE

How better to cushion the blow of those pesky alimony payments than by mopping up royalties from songs about your marriage break-up? Loads have done it: Phil Collins, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, sundry country music folk, even Eminem. Most famously, Marvin Gaye released Here My Dear, an entire double album of such stuff after a court decreed that most of the cash from his next record should be handed over to ex-wife Anna Gordy. I'm working on an article for a UK musi... MORE

It's curious how we find the music we love.. on this page, as an Old Guy I've been introduced to bands and musicians I would never have known about (thanks Lambcurry666 for the heads up on Aesop Rock).. well, I found a new inspiration - the checkout isle at Superstore Supermarket.. while waiting to pay for my milk and eggs, staring me in the eyes was Marvin Gaye - What's Going On. So, never having actually heard the album, I picked it up for $9.99.. and, uh, perhaps ... MORE

It's been a long, stressful, infuriating day but the boys are now in bed and the evening is now mine and my wife's. So we break open the pint bottle I've been saving of my favorite beer ever--Tripel Karmeliet--and play side two of Marvin Gaye's Midnight Love. "Turn on Some Music" has always been one of my favorite non-hit soul songs (along with Parliament's "Getten' to Know You", Sly Stone's "Just Like a Baby", and Curtis Mayfield's "Right on for the Darkness"). ... "One day the Buddha held up a flower in front of an audience of 1,250 monks and nuns. He did not say anything for quite a long time. The audience was perfectly silent. Everyone seemed to be thinking hard, trying to see the meaning behind the Buddha's gesture. Then, suddenly, the Buddha smiled. He smiled because someone in the audience smiled at him and at the flower. . . . To me the meaning is quite simple. When someone holds up a flower and shows it to you, he wants you to... MORE

Last year, I discovered a great (funky and soulful) Marvin Gaye live album at my favorite alternative to the iTunes shop, emusic.com, title: "Live in Montreux 1980". I fully agree with the following review at allmusic.com: _"Backed by a stellar band, Gaye exercises and stretches each song to its elastic limits, proving again why he was the yardstick by which all other live performers measured themselves, as well as further solidifying his reputation as one of the mo... What a great feeling to wake up and be a full time music blogger! That is code for unemployed actually...but being an unemployed full time music blogger preparing for an impending move to California already feels WAY better than being an employed cubicle drone. So i guess music bloggers are supposed to hip people to new stuff, right? Well...i have stumbled across this tune...its by this really soulful singer...he is covering some obscure band from across the pond.... MORE

First off, I like Jamiroquai and have purchased their music for years. I am no hater. I understand how folks think they were influenced by Stevie Wonder, but to my untrained ears, though, he gets a whole lot from Marvin. To me his entire sound and vision come from this source:Marvin Gaye's Here,My Dear. The funk, the extraterrestial trappings, and the general vibe of J's stuff hew pretty close to Here, My Dear. I am not going to retell the tale of Marvin's divorce, and ho... MORE

A recent search has shown that Viacom owned iFilm, a service that lets users upload videos, contains plenty of material that Viacom does not own the rights to, according to Ars Technica . This could present a problem in Viacom's lawsuit against youtube for copyright infringement. Especially since youtube appears to take a more active role in deleting illegal content from its site than iFilm. Link To Full Article... MORE
