AMG Review of What's New
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideSome of arranger/pianist Marty Paich's finest work was documented on records with small big bands during the 1957-59 period. Fortunately, three of the albums were reissued by Discovery in the early '80s, although they have yet to appear on CD. For this near-classic, Paich utilizes an all-star West Coast 13-piece group to perform eight of his originals and "What's New." With such major soloists as trumpeter Jack Sheldon, trombonist Herbie Harper, altoist Herb Geller, the tenors of Bob Cooper and Bill Perkins, and Paich himself on piano, this would be a notable session anyway, but it is the lean and swinging charts that really make this a highly recommended set.
