AMG Review of New York Scene
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe title of this Discovery LP reissue of a high-quality Warner Bros. date does not refer to the recording location (which was actually Los Angeles), but the fact that the ten songs that are performed were all originally from New York shows. Arranger/pianist Paich utilizes a 12-piece group to perform such numbers as "It's All Right With Me," "I Love Paris," "Too Close for Comfort" and "If I Were a Bell." Among the many soloists are altoist Art Pepper (who was on many records with Paich during the era), trumpeter Stu Williamson, trombonist Bobby Enevoldsen and Jimmy Giuffre on clarinet and baritone. Cool-toned jazz at its best.
