AMG Review of Feel the Phuff
Andrew Hamilton
All Music GuideKenny "Babyface" Edmonds cut his creative teeth in Manchild, a seven-piece, self-contained band from Indianapolis, IN, that recorded two albums for Carl Davis' Chi-Sound Records. "The Phuff" and "If You Don't Tell No One" are black ock songs complete with the acid guitar, written by Reginald Griffin and Kevin Farrell; unfortunately, black ock never caught on with urban radio. Early examples of Babyface's brilliance are evident on the plaintive allads "One Tender Moment" and "Our Message." An album of many styles, with "Joy" an obvious attempt to emulate Earth, Wind & Fire. A polished set, but there are no real highs, but on the other side, no real lows either.
