Malcolm Middleton, ex-Arab Strap, is one of those people, the mere mention of whose name begs the question: what's he up to now? asked in a tone that's halfway between Pete Doherty and Weird Al Yankovic. the answer: i know at least three unfortunate souls getting a bleak-over from our perennially bummed boy.1- Madonna. as sure as the dead can dance, Malcolm has taken a track off 1984's Like a V...

... and Santa turns out to be a depressed, staggering, whiskey-swigging Scot. Or so the official "festive" video for "We're All Going To Die" has it. The song leads off the ex-Arab Strap Malcolm Middleton's 2007 solo album A Brighter Beat. (The Santa in the video is not Middleton himself, but Kim Noble.) How fitting. I mean, If I'd had to venture out to shops and malls in the past couple of wee...

Loneliness Shines..Born and raised in Falkirk, Scotland, Malcolm Middleton found fame as the member of Arab Strap commonly credited with ‘most things musical’. While Arab Strap are known for their uncomfortably intimate lyrics, Middleton’s solo career, which ran in tandem with the band until they split in 2006, has provided an outlet for Middleton’s more personal and, at times, more harrow
It's getting to that time of year again where we're building up to the Xmas No 1, except this year we someone to contend with The X Factor. For the past few years the Xmas No 1 hasn't been the battle it once was - becoming all too predictable with The X Factor winner of that year going straight in a No 1, with no one else getting a look in. (The last major chart battle I remember was between ...
Simon mentioned this record a month or two ago. It's been out for a while in the UK, but just got released here. If you caught the Mojo: Made in Britain free CD sampler last month, you might have heard "A Brighter Beat" in amongst the boy and girl bands...sounding sort of like a philosopher caught at McDonalds. Anyway wonderful, mordant, downbeat stuff from half of the now defunct Arab Stra...
My current musical obsession: Malcolm Middleton, espescially the song Fight Like the Night off his most recent album, this year's A Brighter Beat (on Full Time Hobby records). It's a fantastic indie rock duet with the lovely Jenny Reeve with some fantastic lyrics ("Crawl into this rut with me and hold my chin up") and great keyboard and guitar lines. I cannot stop listening to it.
I heard on 6 Music this morning that this song is one of the favourites to be number at Christmas. Can this be true or did I dream it? It was early, I mean before the sun rose. It would be bloody brilliant if it was.
We like Malcolm Middleton. We really do. He's interesting, spouts opinions that match our views and is great to interview. Yet today he doesn't seem in the mood. He hardly talks to the crowd for the first few songs. Aaah someone's rather cheekily put a bag of Smokey Bacon McCoy's crisps on a stick.
