Blog post image preview Okay... back home after my trip to Sasquatch! Music Festival... (hence the song from and the poster about Mr. M. Ward) Cool song... although he wasn't there. (his loss) Overall a great festival... I went to the first two days (out of three) and it was definitely worth the 13-hour drive from San Francisco... (also got a chance to see and experience the wonders that are Portland and Seattle... more about that in a future post)... Day One started with a blast of The Whigs... MORE

M Ward for President!

Artist:
Album: Post-War
So, being an avid Bright Eyes fan, I first M Ward when he played gee-tar for them on the Late Late Show back in 2004. But, it was only recently that I actually starting listening to his music. I absolutely love Post-War and think that the folk/indie sound that he has going on is absolutely beautiful, yes? Anyways, he collaborated with Zooey Deschanel this year on a project called She & Him, that I adore. I love Zooey in Almost Famous, as well as Hitchhiker's Guide, and I l... MORE

Blog post image preview keep art alive; art by julie hill (from my work-in-progress something) the door swung open and i jumped out of the car, flip flops half off of each foot, the pale yellow ones with the plastic pink daisies at the toes. she said i ran with arms outstretched, off the pavement and up onto the sidewalk. she had to slam the door haphazardly behind her, and run to catch me. the sand flew up behind me like a windstorm, the shoes flapping and flying off completely, and me not n... Walking through ash...

Artist:
Album: Transfiguration of Vincent
Track:
Blog post image preview THE ROADCormac McCarthy Sons and fathers are central to Cormac McCarthy’s novels. So much so you could say most of his books are about what means to be a man - and if in becoming a man tenderness can survive? That theme and the power of death loom through his work, great, churning, masculine universes overflowing with Old Testament savagery and a primal mysticism indebted to the blood-drenched history of the American West. To live in Cormac McCarthy’s world is to certa... MORE

Blog post image preview saw the indubitable m ward tonight last minute 5th row seats at cost on craigs list was a nice weekend omen damn, that guy puts on a classy show, so moody he played solo tonight and sounded like a full band at times with his very impressive fingers rambled all over the stage like a man posessed, rarely engaging with the audience at all, except through some very emotionally expressive guitar and vocal stylings watching this guy, you really feel like you're seeing... The American Friend

Artist:
Album: Transfiguration of Vincent
Other Tags: flashback to 2003
Blog post image preview Sydney, Australia. 2003: Matt Ward looks like a boy, much younger than his 29 years. Though he says, without too much drama and maybe just the slightest smile, “Sometimes I think I’m an old man.” The singer-songwriter who operates under the vaguely anonymous moniker of ‘M. Ward’ evokes those contradictorily aged and reborn qualities on all three of his solo recordings, mixing blues, folk and country influences with an offbeat and dream-ridden approach that places him d... On M Ward's Post-War

Artist:
Album: Post-War
Blog post image preview POST-WAR M Ward (Merge Records) Strange title: makes you wonder what he means. Though the words to M Ward’s cover of Daniel Johnston’s ‘To Go Home’ may get to the bone of it: “God it’s great to be alive, it takes the skin right off my hide, to think I’ll have to give it all up someday.” Fifth album in, Ward advances on oft-made comparisons to Nick Drake and Tom Waits with his own sleepy-voiced blend of upbeat melancholy and gravely dreaminess. It’s a paper-against-co... MORE

Why I stopped buying and downloading music, and why it's time to change that.

Artist:
Album: Post-War
Track:
Blog post image preview It's been years since I've earnestly downloaded music. I remember Kazaa, that was the bees knees at first. Once Limewire happened to me, I was obsessed.. You wouldn't have believed how bad I got. I spent most of my time trying to patch the holes of my musical life, reaquainting with the 80s in a way I had always dreamt. That's the thing about forward movement pre-internet: you had your memories, or you had a cassette tape. Just as you can emulate every gaming platform fr... MORE

Chinese Translation

Artist:
Track:
Free music video of Chinese Translation (2)
Hmm what is it with me and the Chinese this week? I wonder if Albarn needs a translator? (see last post) M Ward is up for the task... I haven't stopped smiling since watching this. Such a sentimental translation from song to video.

Blog post image preview I was looking around last night and was surprised to see it. The retail date is Tuesday Aug 29th. I purchased it and gave it an initial listen very late last night, and I think it is very good. More focused and directed than his previous. What's your take on M? Can this guy stand on his own as an artist, or will he always need the tour support of Bright Eyes and Jim James?
