Hybrids, synthesis, mash-ups, grafting, genetic modification, fusion, collage, chimeras-- they are all words to describe the same function: bring one or two (or more) seemingly disparate elements together to create something new. I love how M.I.A. so seamlessly combines everything that is hot and bumpin from Jamaican dancehall, UK grime, and her own quirky, feminine style. I also love it when someone with their own Jamaican/UK flavour remixes her tunes and totally spices it up. The new remix of M.I.A.'s "Boyz" featuring Akon and Rock City is a prime example - it takes her song which is already PURE FIYAH and adds a luscious male patois to balance the men with the Boyz. M.I.A. releases her sophomore album, Kala on August 21st. The first single off that album will be "Boyz." Its full of na-na-nas and has a little tropical flare to it. M.I.A.
