Low Write Music for Upcoming Dance Piece, Switch Up Their Usual M.O. of Writing Songs for People Who Smoke a Lot of Pot and Sit Around a Lot or Are Really Depressed and Sit Around a Lot
about 1 month ago

First Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed scores for a stage version of Kafka's “Metamorphosis.” Then The Knife wrote that opera about Darwin. And now Low have created the original music and vocal orchestration for an upcoming dance piece by choreographer Morgan Thorson. Where would we be without indie musician/highbrow art collabos to make us feel classy? Thank God we have Low to add to this

    If you were born yesterday

In some of the more exciting news I've heard this week, everyone's favorite Slow-rocker's, and I'm speaking of Low, have announced plans to release a Christmas-themed 7'' and three European one off's which are being billed as Holiday shows. The 7'' features "Santa is Coming Over" b/w "The Coming of Jah," which is apparently as reggae as it's name suggests. While the very thought of this makes me...

Low - You May Need A Murderer

Stream the documentary, by Dutch tv/documentary maker David Kleijwegt, here.I found the pacing, the performances and the confessional nature of this portrait of Low (mainly Alan Sparhawk) really engaging. Mimi usually fades to the background unless she's singing in performance. Her candor in this documentary reveals her personality and her qualities that probably keep Sparhawk somewhat grounded...

It's been a long time since I've posted anything up here! Hi MOG friends. (Do I still have any MOG friends?)I've been real busy working on the next Roommate album and some other projects. I won't post any samples of the album yet, but I did perform one of its tracks on the U. of Texas' KVRX radio station the day after playing at the ridiculous circus that is SXSW, and I've posted the recording ...

Low, St. Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny

Even a band as composed as Low must have rubbed hands with excitement at the prospect of playing a cathedral in downtown Kilkenny. The furrow they have tilled is entirely their own; telekinetic harmonies, distortion without sounding metallic; dark to light and back again, all within the blood-red lyrical themes that colour their glacial folk-rock. Slowcore Week: 15 Years of Chairkickers Music with Low (part 2)

Things We Lost in the Fire (2000) The opening bars signalled the change immediately. The guitar part of 'Sunflower' chugs along, and Mimi's upbeat snare is only slightly on the slow side of regular pop or folk. Even the fact that the album opens with Mimi harmonizing from the first bar - a first - tacitly foreshadows an album less often about loneliness, "feel[ing] small" or "the times you wer...

When I Go Deaf

I love this song, this whole record in fact. Low's 'The Great Destroyer' album is one of those seminal albums in my life...it has just etched a certain space out in my soul...and I will take it with me for the rest of my life. I probably have 10 or 15 albums that have had that affect on me...maybe. So, every couple of weeks I like to share a track off of one of those... Low - 'When I Go Dea...

Low, "Drums & Guns"

Everybody’s favorite slo-core minimalists are back with a beautiful, intense, politically-relevant album called Drums and Guns, out last week on Sub Pop. Here’s a bit from my Dusted review: “Drums and Guns has a sparse, understated beauty to it, electronically-generated rhythms under otherworldly harmonies, and subtle violence buried in the words. It's dark, lovely and slow to blossom, bu

New Low Video - "Santa's Coming Over"

It's clearly the season for a lot of Christmas (and other holiday) songs, so brace yourself. Low's "Santa's Coming Over" gets us started on a creepier note -- the track's title and main sentiment sounds more like a warning than most Santa songs, which is reflected by (and refracted onto) the faces of the various cherubic kids and post-kids in this video. The song appears on a 7" of the same nam...

I am so happy that I am finally gong to get to see Low...a band that I had resigned myself to never seeing since they never, ever came to Columbus.
