Levon Helm is probably best known to most people as That Guy Who Played Loretta Lynn's Dad in Coal Miner's Daughter. He's also, of course, well known as the drummer and occasional (and best) singer for the legendary, if unfortunately named The Band, who backed Dylan, released their own records, and co-starred in the legendary Neil Diamond concert movie The Last Waltz. Levon Helm is back. This is a very good thing. Levon's resume is as impressive as any in rock, and his distinctive voice helped breathe life into so many of Robbie Robertson's lyrics. Other versions of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down are nice, but in Levon, Virgil Kane comes alive, breathes, slogs through the mud and the moral confusion central to the song.And Levon brings this 'everyman' quality to so many tracks through the years, with The Band and without.In 1998 ...
