AMG Review of The Longer You Wait
Richard S. Ginell
All Music GuideHis brand of funky soul-jazz having been driven out of fashion, Les McCann was almost invisible on the recording scene during the 1980s; this artifact from the short-lived JAM label is one of the few examples we have. Temporarily living in a small apartment in the San Fernando Valley at the time, McCann was attempting a comeback with his new Magic Band, which, with the help of a few expert sidemen, does get the McCann show back on its feet, if not exactly up to a fast sprint. McCann takes control of the music here, writing most of the material and giving the funkified tenor and soprano saxes of Bobby Bryant, Jr. plenty of blowing room. Some of the old gospel verve is recaptured, especially on "I Love You," and there is plenty of soulful, accomplished acoustic and electric piano work, but there are still some bitter aftertastes of his disco detour on certain rhythm tracks.
