doing their thing over an electro remake of a dancehall remake of a ska cover of a German easy-listening orchestra's version of South African kwela music (and in the process nicking a few words from Steven Sondheim). That takes some beating for post-modernism. For earlier parts of the journey, you might want to go here - http://mog.com/Baudolino/blog_post/162885
Even by Scratch's idiosyncratic standards, this one is a bit unusual - doing over an old Lieber and Stoller classic on a rhythm better known as "Clint Eastwood" or "Kill them All and Come Back Alone"
This is the ORIGINAL mix on 33rpm 7" single on the Black Art Disco Bum label (honestly) of "Bafflin' Smoke Signals" - released just after the death of Pope John Paul I and the election of John Paul II in late 1978
This tune from 1963 will explain it. It was a great favourite at Sir Coxsone the Downbeat's dances, and the then Little Lee Perry devised his own special dance to go with the rhythm, and when the tune was played he would take the floor and dance the "Chicken Scratch".
This tune is a good year or two before ska, and is so old that it might even be Cluett Johnson and Ian Pearson on bass and drums
This isn't the same song as the Joe Tex number of the same name, that I previously posted.
Instead this is Lee Perry effortlessly churning out another maddeningly infectious tune
