All Music GuideLee Konitz is matched with drummer Roberto Gatto and bassist Ares Tavolazzi in this 2002 studio session for Philology. The veteran alto saxophonist is in great form, as he seems especially stimulated by his rhythm section. The date pretty much sticks to originals, though listeners may catch the well-hidden chord changes to "All the Things You Are" in the adventurous "Variations 15,000" and those to "Body and Soul" within "Variation 2,000,000." Konitz teases listeners with "More Nobility," a playful reworking of "Cherokee," which was composed by Ray Noble. The one outright standard is the bittersweet allad "Old Folks," which becomes a bit more melancholy as Konitz and Tavolazzi offer an intriguing duo performance. "Gatto & Lee" is a brilliant joint improvisation by Kontiz and Gatto. The intimate sound achieved by engineer Mario Fabiani adds to the appeal of this very rewarding CD.
