Singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer Lee Hazlewood died Saturday (Aug.4). In 2005 he was diagnosed with terminal renal cancer, yet undertook an extensive round of interviews and promotional activities in support of his latest album, Cake or Death. Hazlewood is best known for writing the 1960s Nancy Sinatra hit, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". He also wrote "Houston," a hit recorded by Dean Martin. Lee's about ready to leave us, I hear...He did a version of this before, kinda..his early solo version of this was kind of a narrative about recording the song with Nancy & Billy Strange...very cool...On this one he reverts to songs original melody & does a swinging jazzy version...the recording is excellent, and yes, that is the one & only Duane Eddy....It's lovely. I picked up the new Lee Hazelwood album today. I wandered into the local record store and despite my intent to keep my wallet in my pants, it just jumped out and into my hands.... While I am enjoying Pity Party Dec 2006... I just discovered that Lee Hazelwood has a new album on the way... If you don't know Lee you don't love rock and roll. He wrote These Boots are Made for Walking, and a host of other great pop tunes back in the day. His voice is pure gravel and and and.... you just have to hear him....
