Led Zeppelin II

Recorded quickly during Led Zeppelin's first American tours, Led Zeppelin II provided the blueprint for all the heavy metal bands that followed it. Since the group could only enter the studio for brief amounts of time, most of the songs that compose II are reworked lues and ock & roll standards that the band was performing on-stage at the time. Not only did the short amount of time result in a lack of original material, it made the sound more direct. Jimmy Page still provided layers of guitar overdubs, but the overall sound of the album is heavy and hard, brutal and direct. "Whole Lotta Love," "The Lemon Song," and "Bring It on Home" are all based on classic lues songs -- only, the riffs are simpler and louder and each song has an extended section for instrumental solos. Of the remaining six songs, two sport light acoustic touches ("Thank You," "Ramble On"), but the other four are straight-ahead heavy ock that follows the formula of the revamped lues songs. While Led Zeppelin II doesn't have the eclecticism of the group's debut, it's arguably more influential. After all, nearly every one of the hundreds of Zeppelin imitators used this record, with its lack of dynamics and its pummeling riffs, as a blueprint.

Rhythmic Pacing In Led Zeppelin's “Ramble On”By Bill Leigh | December 2006 In our early playing years, coming up with bass lines on the spot can be nerve-racking. We may not have the confidence or fingerboard familiarity to relax and listen for what to add—so we stay with the old standbys: playing the roots, and following the guitar riffs and rhythms. But there’s a better way, and John Paul

Been busy lately sorry so quiet... - so what do you think about John Bonham?

If I were ever to be a percussionist/drummer, there's one pinnacle for me to emulate:John Bonham.Boundless energy, bottomless well of variation and rhythm, and as expressive as a drummer has ever been... Of course there are others who are good - across many genres and ages... but John's style, prowess, and execution have not been rivaled (for me, at least). His son's awesome, too!

...It's the birthday of native Londoner George Martin (1926) who's renown in the music world stems primarily from his work as the producer of the Beatles circa 1962 - 1969...an auspicious chance meeting with a Liverpudlian band manager Brian Epstein who sang the high praises of this quartet in his artist stable led to Martin's signing the four lads to his label...Though George has also worked w...

Guitar Pains

So, I've been picking on my dad's old Gibson acoustic guitar for a couple of months now, and I finally found a free weekend where I can stop worrying about maintaining a 3.0 GPR to take a lesson. I thought that I had developed the callouses necessary to play guitar and that the lesson would just be for learning, not some kind of ritual self-sacrifice. Boy, was I wrong. I walked in the room a...

Your Favorite Saturday Night Record?

It's Saturday night and you're getting ready to go out. What's your favorite Saturday night record? If I had to pick one record, which is exactly what I'm asking you to do, I'd choose Led Zeppelin II. To say that this record absolutely rocks is an understatement and it always gets me pumped. So it's Saturday night and Zep is kicking it on the stereo. Have a great night!

The ongoing technological bumps with Mog-o-matic indexing have their own charm. My "last played" songs have been stuck in the middle of a brief Led Zeppelin binge for about a week. It's humbling, and entertaining.I used to have this fascination with the idea of going to hipsters' houses when they weren't around. It seems like if you went over and read all their books, listened to all their musi...

A Call For Harmonica Songs

I have always wanted to play a musical instrument but never put the time in. That may be a slight factor in my love for sequenced computer music, the programming relieves my more classical inadequacies.I received a harmonica as a gift recently and am really excited to learn, although it will probably have to wait until law school is done. I have had several people offer me lessons, so the fore...

No, not that Moses but this kid, whose selfless act redeemed mankind in my eyes today. I know there many, many depressing & traumatic things going on in the world right now and in the past...but after the greed induced savagery at Walmart yesterday (can't even bring myself to link to the story, it's so awful), this news restored some faith in my fellow man. And not only did he do something rea...

Led Zeppelin

I have a theory about why so many people on Mog have Led Zeppelin at the top of the list in their libraries. It's scarcity: you can't buy online, so when someone lends you CDs, or whatever, you rip them all just in case.I love the clicky thing on this. And all the classic Zep stuff: lovely guitar bits followed by the the most powerful power breaks ever, all set against a background of complete ...
