Led Zeppelin

Houses of the Holy

Houses of the Holy follows the same basic pattern as Led Zeppelin IV, but the approach is looser and more relaxed. Jimmy Page's riffs rely on ringing, folky hooks as much as they do on thundering lues-rock, giving the album a lighter, more open atmosphere. While the pseudo-eggae of "D'Yer Mak'er" and the affectionate James Brown send-up "The Crunge" suggest that the band was searching for material, they actually contribute to the musical diversity of the album. "The Rain Song" is one of Zep's finest moments, featuring a soaring string arrangement and a gentle, aching melody. "The Ocean" is just as good, starting with a heavy, funky guitar groove before slamming into an a cappella section and ending with a swinging, doo wop-flavored rave-up. With the exception of the rampaging opening number, "The Song Remains the Same," the rest of Houses of the Holy is fairly straightforward, ranging from the foreboding "No Quarter" and the strutting hard rock of "Dancing Days" to the epic folk/metal fusion "Over the Hills and Far Away." Throughout the record, the band's playing is excellent, making the eclecticism of Page and Robert Plant's songwriting sound coherent and natural.

What is up with Led Zeppelin? In what is perhaps the most passive public argument ever, this week has been chalk full of web stories where Jimmy Page's manager Peter Mensch "said this" and then he "said that." It's hard to keep up. BBC 6 Musicreports that Page is all for a reunion and bassist John Paul Jones and second generation drummer Jason Bonham "had a really good time rehearsing, the thr...

News broke this week that the remaining Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, along with drummer Jason Bonham, son of late Zep drummer John Bonham were thinking of hitting the road and recording a new album. The only problem? They "are trying out a couple of singers" John Paul Jones told BBC Radio 4. Seems the threesome are eager to get back on stage, even if it means leaving beh...

I'm on the phone, watching the telly on the wall tuned to Sky News and the Breaking News has Page, Plant, and Jones walking into a press conference to announce their reunion for a one-off gig at The O2. Over an hour later and not even Reuters has it on their Web site, let alone News sites like the BBC or The Times. So much for new media. The O2 Web site is melting under the fan attack. When I do...

Playing guitar; "The Rain Song"

Alright. I've been playing the guitar for about 35 years. I was a kid in the 70's and I had neighbor friends who had older brothers. We all loved rock and guitars so we all aspired to become guitar players. It was as normal as competition in baseball or football for us. Learning new songs and playing them the way our guitar heroes did was the ultimate thrill. To nail it. That did not happen ver...

Found this great show for all you Led Heads from blogger Ryan:Ryan says: "A MUST HAVE RECORDING!"After finishing the first round of shows that year in the states, Robert Plant and his wife were in Greece on vacation when they got into a serious car accident. The injuries would force Led Zeppelin to put the tour on hold. The few early shows from that spring were all there would be. When the band...
