Lambchop flex their creative muscle in characteristically low-key style again; but the Devil is in the detail.

Who would have thought? I wouldn't have - a Memphis to Nashville cover of "I've Been Lonely For So Long" by Lambchop? Really ? Yeah - and I feel like they truly pull it off. Kurt pulls off the high vocals. the trebely guitars, the active yet understated drums, the un-understandable horn section, all delivered very quietly and oh-so-softly, so you don't even know thay've arrived? a great interpetation of the song. If you haven't listened to the original, se... MORE

If sundays are for covers................then

Artist:
Album: Is A Woman (Is A Bonus)

this is what I'll post. Since Lambchop released their Is A Woman album back in 2002 it has been my favorite sunday album. I never get tired of it and I would definitely bring it to the island. I often put this album at the top of my imaginary all-time greatest album list. So many people........so much peace. I got my hands on the limited edition containing a bonus disc. The first track is a cover of the Sisters of Mercy classic This Corrosion. I don't need to tell ... MORE

Blog post image preview So after falling for the hype c/o Berlin U-Bahn ads and allmusic, I decided I couldn't wait for its stateside release and splurged on Damaged, the latest album by country-folk weirdo Kurt Wagner and his backing band. I have only heard parts of Is A Women and Nixon since then, but from what I can tell the earlier material is slightly more streamlined than any of the tracks on Damaged. Still, I have not heard anything better and more complete this year than Wagner's latest. ... MORE

I saw an ad today for Lambchop's new CD called Damaged. I had not heard of Lambchop at the time, but I was outraged. "How dare a band named after a PBS sock puppet rip off Black Flag" I thought. Through a simple allmusic search, however, I saw that they were a quirky, unpredictable country jazz noise band, with a 13 year history and a concept album about Watergate under their belt. They've been very successful in Europe, but have failed in the US. I will be purchasing Dama... MORE

Prior to the MC Chris show (see below) I was at the Lambchop show down the road. (I do have some taste). The Lambchop contingent was somewhat reduced from the 15 or so member line up - just Kurt, drums, keys and a few guitars. There were, however, augmented by the Tosca string quartet. Tosca, if you are not familiar, is a hip classical act from Austin - most noted for doing the soundtrack to Waking Life. Kurt was as animated as I've seen him live - the mostly mellow ... MORE

Blog post image preview My increasing tendency to sop up laboriously slow and methodical roots music like it was jalapeno-vinegar gravy (that is to say, I'd lap it up with cornbread from my plate and yours, and a straw if need be) is quickly becoming the stuff of parody. So when I saw the description on the new Lambchop record that "they take a mellow and contemplative Leonard Cohen-like turn," I almost didn't play it at first, like it would just be courting the prurient side of my being. But I s... MORE

Blog post image preview I just discovered these guys. They're generally classified as "alt-country" but I don't know why. I've only nabbed their collection since of the turn of the millenium so, I dunno, maybe in the 90's they were more country but what they sound like to me is a very white soul group with hints of Nashville (their home) thrown in. Maybe that's the "alt". Regadless of where they're stocked on the shelves this is some pretty fantastic music. Groovy, mellow and rich with great lyri... MORE

What's in a name?

Artist:
Album:

Does the name of a band ever put you off? Names of bands that I think put people off, when really the music would be something they would quite like if they listened to it: Lambchop Custard The Bloodthirsty Lovers Volebeats On the other hand, if these band names put you off, then the music probably would as well: Butthole Surfers Revolting Cocks Any more in either category?

Saturday 09.30.06, GAMH:Lambchop By Saturday night my tetanus-laden arm was feeling much better, but I was still intensely grateful this was a seated show. Especially when I spotted Jonathan Richman lurking near my chair at the back. On this particular evening Lambchop was six members strong and accompanied by the Austin-based Tosca String Quartet on a number of songs, which expanded the band's sound from merely pretty to downright orchestral. Live, Lambchop sounds so... MORE
