Unlike her indie-disco counterparts CSS, the Gossip and Ting Tings, New Zealand one-woman show Ladyhawke has yet to break through to the mainstream, despite possessing a much more polished sound that seems tailor-made for the upper reaches of the charts. Her self-titled debut album, co-written with the likes of Pascal Gabriel (Dido) and Hannah Robinson (Girls Aloud) suggests that commercial success will surely only be a matter of time. Not afraid to plunder both her cool and distinctly uncool record collection, Ladyhawke, aka Pip Brown, has crafted 13 instantly accessible songs, each of which sounds like a potential hit single. Heavily influenced by synth pop, new wave, and AOR in equal measures, Ladyhawke, sounds like a who's who of '80s pop. "Back of the Van" is the Pretenders meets Van Halen's "Jump"; "Professional Suicide" sounds like a lost classic Gary Numan single; while the storming chorus of "My Delirium" echoes the power pop of the Bangles and the Go Go's. Best of all is "Crazy World," whose chugging basslines and dreamy synths would perfectly fit the closing scenes of a Brat Pack movie. But despite its blatant retro vibe, it still manages to sound fresh thanks to its clever production and Brown's fiery and vibrant vocals. She may be a rather awkward live performer, but on record she's full of charisma and personality, and never more so than on the thumping "From Dusk Til Dawn" and the highly infectious "Paris Is Burning," arguably two of the finest pop singles to miss the Top 40 in recent times. Ladyhawke is unlikely to win any awards for originality but you'd be hard pressed to find a more consistent and hook-laden debut all year.

Gig Chatter: Ladyhawke, Live in Dublin

(photo: u.o.)On the morning that the Irish media report our biggest jump in unemployment since 1967, a solitary thought occupies my mind: Is there any tickets left for the Ladyhawke gig?See, I've just discovered that the New Zealander is bringing her special brand of 80s-tinged synthpop to the Auld Sod, and being a big fan I don't want to miss out. A quick internet search later, I'm surprised ...

Ladyhawke: My Delirium

I'll say it: I don't get the Ladyhawke love. To me, the Ladyhawke surge is akin to that of last year's Rogue Traders wave of fascination, and to a lesser degree, the Dragonette spree (I hesitate to make that connection because I still actively believe in Dragonette.) What I'm hearing is some strictly by-the-books rock chord changes and uninspired vocals and rhymes. Very safe, very '90s po...

NEW MUSIC VIDEO 3 Remixes: Ladyhawke - My Delirium
about 1 year ago

I must say, Ladyhawke is getting on my good side lately. With this video, I mean. I know I won't be the first one to say this but this video just puts Ladyhawke 's artistic take on music on the map! It's truly breathtaking *sigh. Chateau Marmont gave the track a retro remix treatment, while Fan Death remix is plain sick. Toddla T & Ross Orton makes good with techno. Get your doses right ...

The combination of beautiful weather, car culture and a love for loud music is the inspiration for this series I like to call 'Windows down, volume up." Sometimes there are just songs or albums that demand this series of conditions in order for maximum enjoyment. The first induction to this series is the song Magic by Ladyhawke. This dance-pop single from her debut album Ladyhawke is a synth-he...

Ladyhawke “Dusk Till Dawn”

So I don't know when my relationship with Ladyhawke fizzled, but I recently saw her video for "Dusk Till Dawn" on TV and it kind of rekindled the flame. I don't know why but I'm a sucker for 80's synth-pop. Something in between a Whitesnake video and the movie Halloween, the video made [...]
