Kraftwerk have embodied the robot spirit in sound and longevity and it has fueled their musical careers for 35 years. The German quartet that pioneered not only electronica but their own Doepfer sequencer announced a few shows in the US leading up to their Coachella performance. Only 3 dates have been reported thus far - Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Denver. April:19 Minneapolis, MN - Myth20 Milwaukee, WI - Eagles Ballroom23 Denver, CO - The Fillmore26 Indio, CA - Coache... You may not readily associate late 70's techno band Kraftwerk with funk, but the direct influence on Afrika Bambaata's 1982 hit "Planet Rock" is a fact of Funk History. Kraftwerk are the reason music sounds like it does today. Pioneers, 20 years before their time, they invented much of what we recognise as the tools of electronic music. But quite apart from being inventors they were funky as hell and became the most sampled artsits ever..So, here's the audio for " TransE... MORE
As the landscape of the industry continues to change, musicians have shown they no longer need record companies to survive or sell their music. Now we can see the industry no longer needs musicians. Check out this example of machines doing it for themselves; Of course you have got to give them the basics first, but once they are shown the ropes they knock out those tricky solos again and again without a bum note. This robot was programmed to play John Coltrane's ma... MORE
Metal, New Wave, Electronica . . . Wednesday has sort of taken on a wierd life of its own here in MOGville, so I decided today was as good a day as any to post this. I have been listening to a serious amount of Kraftwerk lately. Early and later stuff. One song that has been a particularly huge hit around my house has been "The Robots." My 3 year old and 5 year old love this song and beg me to play it on an almost daily basis. When I do, they always do their best to d... MORE
My next door neighbor Bruce asked me the other night if I had any Kraftwerk discs he could borrow, and I met his reasonable query with my usual unreasonable response, that being "What am I, an asshole? OF COURSE I have fuckin' Kraftwerk discs! Only a jackass wouldn't!" Kraftwerk were so goddamn awesome and so unbelievably prescient that they ought to be considered fuckin' prophets! People get all uppity because their precious shaggy haired band of spleef-addled heshers hav... MORE
Round about 4.10 this straight down the line Kraftwerk cold techno thing sort of changes gear and, to my robot ear, turns into something a bit special. Lovely bit at 4.40. And then notches up around 6.00.
And of course, it's that time of the night again: Kraftwerk Korner time!! Tonight it's a usually-overlooked gem from the enigmatic "Radio-Activity" album from 1975, the closing track of my #2 favorite Kraftwerk album of all time... I want this song played at my funeral, damnit. It starts off kinda slow, a bit gloomy... the beat starts... the sound kicks in... and it just goes from gloom to downright happy. This is the kind of song I listen to when I need a good cr... MORE
And, to close out Chapter 20, Kraftwerk Korner proudly presents, in its beautifully perfect entirety... ...yep, you guessed it. "Trans-Europe Express." When I first heard this song I was hooked. A few listens more and I was in love. Compared to a lot of other excellent Kraftwerk songs, to me this one just oozes perfection. [I'm sure someone's bound to say, _No way!! That title belongs to "Autobahn"!!_ Really.] All aboard the Trans-Europa!! And on that note, u... MORE
