So i've been listening to some old tunes recently, perhaps because I'm getting old and jaded, or maybe there's too many bands hitting the wrong notes for my ears these days - but recently i've been listening to them Kitchens of Distinction - mostly the Strange Free World album. that's the one from 1991, with the Nettwerk/4AD looking cover art - and songs like Railwayed and my fave - Drive That Fast. this is a song that i don't think i could ever get tired of. ... I don't remember when I first heard this song. I seem to recall it being played on 970 AM (The Beat) here in Portland. My first reaction was, "Who is this?" I don't really know a lot about Kitchens of Distinction, however, there was a time when "The Death of Cool" ruled my CD player.

Robin's post about Chapterhouse's song "Pearl" also inspired a shoe-gazing fit in me. It made me think of a stellar band that didn't get far in the U.S.: Kitchens of Distinction. KoD was an amazing group that was openly homosexual at a time when, well, we were all still kind of prickly about the whole thing, frankly. Stupid. I don't know where things went wrong for KoD, but they should have become one of the biggest bands of their day. They had the songs, they had the sound, where did it go wrong? They are like the more rocked out younger brothers of the Cocteau Twins. For anyone looking for a slighty edgier dream pop sound.
