AMG Review of 'Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia, Vol. 2
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe second of two CDs taken from one night's performance by trumpeter Kenny Dorham's short-lived group, the Jazz Prophets (featuring J.R. Monterose on tenor, guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Arthur Edgehill), has eight selections released for the first time on this CD; all of the music has since been reissued on a double CD along with the first volume. The music is spirited hard bop and the repertoire has six of Dorham's originals (several of which deserve to be revived) along with the standards "My Heart Stood Still" and "Who Cares." The double CD is the best purchase.
