After 18 years of growth, Katatonia's music has finally matured fully, and the end result is spectacular.Katatonia has been slowly working toward this moment for the past 11 years. After delivering one of death/doom metal’s most enduring classics in 1996’s Brave Murder Day, the Swedish band underwent a major stylistic makeover. Long unable to perform the harshly growled vocals that the sound d
I first learned about Katatonia when their vocalist, Jonas Renkse, appeared on Ayreon’s 01011001. The great aspect of Ayreon projects is Arjen Lucassen, arranger, producer, performer and mastermind, brings together amazing performers from around the world for each of his rock operas. On 01011001, I found Renkse’s vocals mesmerizing and haunting, which led me to [...]
In recent months, I've been inundated with new music that, in most cases is pretty damn good, but has kept me from one of the main reasons Racer and I started this mad cap Ripple world in the first place. The main reason we kicked this thing into high gear last year was so that we could tell all who were interested about all this great music that has been grossly underappreciated and overlooked...
This is for Chris, who thought I showed my wimpier side yesterday. I don't know a lot about these guys, and frankly don't feel like looking the info up. Lazy, you see. Go ahead and press play, you'll see w...

‘Night is the New Day’ is Katatonia’s eighth studio album. It was recorded throughout July 2009 & was co-produced, engineered and mixed by David Castillo. Recording was divided between Studio Mega (for drums) and Ghost Ward Studios, where most recording took place & which provided a dose of inspiration from the darker corners of life [...]
Photo by Eric HartThis morning was the second time this year that someone has stopped me thinking I'm someone else. Apparently there's a 'David' somewhere in the city and a 'Andrew' in Austin (I think it was) that both look "exactly like" me. Got me thinking again how interesting it would be to meet my two doppelgängers.Has anyone ever met their look-alikes?
The first album to use totally clean vocals, which helps impart a real fragility to the work. Prior to this album most stuff was either distorted or screamed, which I thought worked really well, however you could hear that if they kept this appoach up much longer there would be a danger of things sounding a bit samey.Long may this band last!!
