AMG Review of Klavierstucke (Piano Pieces)/David Tudor, Piano
"Blue" Gene Tyranny
All Music GuideA reissue of the incredible performances of the "Piano Pieces" in their first recording made on September 19, 1958, and September 27, 1959, at WDR Radio in Cologne, Germany. At that time, Tudor was the renowned pianist of avant-garde music (having played Boulez' monumentally complex "First Piano Sonata" from memory, for instance) and the exponent of the new "indeterminate" music of Cage. At some point after these performances, Tudor swore that he would never play a piece of Stockhausen's again, probably for political reasons. Anyhow, these are astonishing concerts of the "Klavierstucke I-VIII," and four versions of "Klavierstuck XI." Highly recommended.
