[VIDEO/MP3] Karl Blau: “Mockingbird Diet”

--- - |- A few months ago Justin from Fishboy sent me a video he recorded of a new Karl Blau song that he played in Texas. I liked it, but apparently forgot to post on it. Well GvB gave me a good reminder yesterday by posting the studio version that'll be on his new record Nature's Got [...] ~~- Karl Blau

WRONG AND SONGING

Karl Blau - "Before Telling Dragons" . Karl Blau's Nature's Got Away is a weird album, with teeth and feathers and amplifiers. Bits of Harry Nilsson, the Zombies, Spoon, Smog. "Before Telling Dragons" is a forest anthem, recorded in a basement. Girl-group drums buried six feet under. A conversation with an electric guitar, all blurry blues and bird-coos. It's words of wisdom from a man who has...

--- - |- Karl Blau is an extremely prolific guy, and yet, like many of my other favorite lo-fi singer-songwriters (see Cass McCombs and Chad VanGaalen), he remains somewhat unfathomably underrated. I was a fan of his psych-folk ode to Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne that dropped earlier this year, and he keeps the jams coming with his new LP, Nature's Got Away. Our friends at Said the Gramop...

I haven't checked out the rest of Karl Blau's album, but this song is a good drinking beer, just chillin' kinda tune. Makes me want to lay out on the lawn or head to the beach.

Honorable Mentions

Mirah- The Joyride RemixesReally interesting remixes. I don't even own the original "Joyride," but bought this on LP for the Phil Elverum remix. Stunning shit.Karl Blau- Beneath WavesCut of Choice: Into the NadaHe's an interesting musician. This record is uneven and sometimes I don't really like his voice. Still, good enough for an honorable mention.Reich: Remixed 2006-Features remixes of P...

KARL BLAU makes music for a drive in the DARK of morning. A SEDAN will do.

i’m digging up the past and revealing some old crow bones♫ Karl Blau – Dark SedanI figure that after that Remix Roundup you guys could use a moment to catch your breath. Karl Blau’s “Dark Sedan” is perfect for that. It’s bouncy rhythm and sparse trumpets pack just enough pep to keep me interested, while Karl’s voice lulls any dancing…

Karl Blau: Zebra (Reviews)

From the psychotic cover art on down, this is not an LP to be missed by fans of the K Records family.Karl Blau, based out of Washington state and a member of the Knw-Yr-Own collective of songwriters, is known as one of the more prolific folk and lo-fi artists currently on the scene. I first became aware of Blau -- most famously a member of D+ with Bret Lunsford (Beat Happening) and Phil Elvrum ...

Karl Blau Schedules Lengthy Tour in Support of Zebra
about 1 month ago

Karl Blau is the type of musician guy who lives in the Pacific Northwest: Anacortes, Washington, to be exact. But if you have a “bottomless glass of wine” like I had for lunch, his name sorta kinda sounds like he could be the front dude of a forgotten post-punk band from, oh say, Belgium, whose "newly discovered" debut LP is getting a limited reissue and who is maybe playing, like, one show at

This album has become a huge part of my rotation. It's songs like "Into the Nada" that define what a summer song is, to me. After listening for a bit, I had a strong sudden urge for Sebadoh. I think vocally there are some similarities. So yeah, Sebadoh likeness = highest honor from me. Starting with "Crashing Waves", "Dragon Song", or "Into the Nada" wouldn't be a bad thing.

New Karl Blau

Karl Blau's upcoming record Zebra (out on K Records 10/9) is shaping up to be my dark horse album of 2009. Blau was a bit of a mystery to me in the past, but I love this new stuff. The inflection of his voice delivering cryptic lyrics about pollinating and crows bones has got to be some of the weirdest stuff out there, and some of the most appealing. I'd like to describe the music as sparse or ...

Karl Blau to Teach Home Recording Class

Damnit! Usually, living in New York gives me a leg up when it comes to super-special events in the music world. But right now, I'm feeling pretty out of the loop: the great Karl Blau, K Records' multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire, is set to school the unwashed masses in the fine art of home recording. The class is called "Quality Home Recording: Creative, Fun, and Sonically Rich emp...

    Apology to the Pollinateurs

I snagged this track a while back from GVB and it has been growing on me ever since. At the time, they described the song as "formless" which seems pretty damn spot on to me. I almost always have to stop what I am doing when I listen to the song, it sort of seeps into your brain. That squealing sax part at 2:20 nearly cuts me in half every time when its up real loud.mp3:Karl Blau - Apology to t...

mp3:Karl Blau – Dark Sedan Newest from K Recs’ Karl Blau. This song sounds exactly what I imagine summer to be like in Anacortes, Washington: Chilly and hazy all at the same time. Karl’s newest album, Zebra, is set for a October 6th release via K.—————————–————
