“There really would be no hip-hop as we know it today if it wasn’t for Def Jam. But you don’t get that respect without also being the label that single-handedly destroyed hip-hop."-KRS One

The Gospel of Hip Hop: The First Instrument by KRS-One
23 days ago

Looks like KRS-One is coming out with a book called, "The Gospel of Hip Hop". "The Teacha discusses the origination of Hip Hop culture and relays specific instances in history wherein one can discover the same spirit and ideas that are at the core of Hip Hop’s current manifestation. He explains Hip Hop down to the actual meaning and linguistic history of the words "hip" and "hop", and describes.

Editorial: Can the Old School Breathe Life Into the New School?

I grew up during an age when hip-hop was the dominant musical art form of my generation. These times you ask? 1994-1999. Even though today hip-hop still has a strong foothold in the industry, the recent releases by Jay-Z and Raekwon have me questioning the mortality of hip-hop music and more importantly of the art forms associated with the music. Where have all the dope deejays, graf writers an...

Video: KRS-One “Def Jam Singlehandedly Destroyed Hip-Hop”

While the teacher expressed his love and respect for the Def Jam brand, he also fingered them as the reason for hip-hop's demise."Def Jam is the dopest label in hip-hop, in the culture of hip-hop," he said. "There really would be no hip-hop as we know it today if it wasn't for Def Jam. But you don't get that respect without also being the label that single-handedly destroyed hip-hop."This is so...

What the police have time to do in North Dakota

Saw this today, and found it to be rather amusing. An entire news special devoted to a major problem that is sweeping the land, and putting our children at risk. Drugs, sex, coffee......? No something much more sinister. Watch out for kids looking to score points for wearing tight sweaters people. Don't say you havent been warned!

Keys 2 the City

Just as hip-hop itself is inseparable from its birthplace in the Bronx, every aspiring MC is eternally connected to the neighborhood they grew up in. "Keys 2 the City" explores the bond between community and MC's by following them to the barbershops, BBQ joints, basketball courts, swap meets and schoolyards that shaped them into the [...]

Mashed Potatoes

I have been seeing a lot of mash up posts on mog today, feel I had to throw in my two cents. Mostly because my bbq chicken was rained on today, and it made me a little irate. It was a sudden downburst that came out of nowhere, still wondering how my sunny skies went grey so quickly. My wife had to throw in, "Guess thats the luck of the Irish", which lead me to post this song.

The Teacha...Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone

Blog post image preview

I have an ex to thank for my appreciation of *KRS-One*. Before the ex, I only knew him as "the rapper on _that REM song_". He then became *_THE_ Teacha* for me. (Not the ex, sillies: *KRS-One*).I really went to town with my last post... this one, I will let the man speak for himself _mostly_, first in a few tracks that I think showcase the man, myth, *_MC_* & legend. Then I will pull a *DIR...
