AMG Review of Running for My Life
Mark Allan
All Music GuideThree self-penned tunes make it a more personal release than many by this wonderful interpreter. Collins seems to be going through a trying period, as detailed in the leadoff title track, which is about ending a failed relationship. Two Stephen Sondheim songs are curiously both from Sweeney Todd. Although it's not clear why, she revisits the bittersweet Jacques Brel tune "Marieke"; as in her version on Whales and Nightingales from a decade earlier, singing in Flemish is particularly affecting.
