AMG Review of At a Dance, in a Studio, on Radio
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideAlthough this is a bootleg album, the music on this LP is historically significant, particularly a couple of titles from 1954 on which tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane (the year before he joined Miles Davis) gets to solo; trumpeter Harold "Shorty" Baker and trombonist Lawrence Brown are also in the supporting cast. Although the bulk of the album is a 1954 dance date (probably taken from a radio broadcast) there are also a few titles from March 1957 by the full Ellington band. This is worth picking up, particularly for the early Coltrane solos.
