AMG Review of Sleepers
Jason Ankeny
All Music GuideThe oppressively bleak Sleepers combines John Williams' signature orchestral approach with atypical electronic effects that underscore the brutality and malice of the onscreen narrative. Equally uncommon is the score's emphasis on style over substance, and without the thematic complexity and melodic power one expects from Williams, much of the music falls flat. A disjointed, murky experience, Sleepers too often devolves into bursts of pure /p>
oise, and while one must applaud Williams for creating music so far removed from his familiar style, he seems out of place in this dark, dissonant context.
