John McLaughlin is playing on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Town Hall in NYC.A snippet from a guitarplayer.com article:Born in Yorkshire, England on January 4, 1942, the guitarist is well known for his eclectic taste in music. McLaughlin was a child when he first fell in love with jazz and the blues, and he was just 11 years old when he began studying and playing the guitar. The 1960s found h...

I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing John McLaughlin's Fourth Dimension the weekend before last in San Francisco. This was the 8th time I've seen him over the years (first was Reading Festival, UK 1975 with the original Mahavishnu Orchestra lineup!).Playing fantastic raw fusion jazz, and now in his 60s, McLaughlin continues to draw amazing musicians around him and drives them to greater ...

John McLaughlin - Binky's Beam

My older brother was keyed in to the British Jazz scene in the mid 60s, and so my ear got tuned to Jazz with New Jazz Orchestra, and Stan Tracey, but the record that really started me understanding and feeling the genre was John McLaughlin's first album as a leader in 1969 - Extrapolation. This is a landmark record, and I've noticed a lot of Jazz musicians citing, like me, Binky's Beam as thei...

Gracenote frustration

My computer runs Linux. I can update my collection automatically, but not my plays. If I update favorites, it has to be manually. But MOG checks with Gracenote before posting manual updates. So John McLauglin's My Goal's Beyond (which I lately rediscovered) comes up "Master Mix, by New Order". No matter how many times I delete and re-enter, it still comes up with the New Order thing.Try it...

Don't Worry, a Jazz Post

I sense a foreboding mood around the Mog and amongst friends lately. I am no winston churchill or anything, but I will say that we should buck up a bit. It ain't so bad, it just seems like life requires some necessary simplification lately. Hope this Bill Evans composition finds you well on this evening.

Early on in John McLaughlin's musical career he learned "the standards". These are the great songs from Jazz history that successive generations of jazz musicians have absorbed, interpreted, improvised upon, and delivered in their own styles, yet always respectful of the musical history that underpins them. Here's a version of the lovely Charlie Mingus tune "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" from the early...

Just prior to forming the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and just emerging from his incredible experience as part of the Miles Davis / Bitches Brew lineup, McLaughlin found himself in New York surrounded by incredible musicians, and was immersed in an electrified jazz scene that was, well, electric! Hendrix was in town around the same time, and thru various jam sessions (including some with Hendrix him...

Purported to be the album that got the attention of Miles Davis, consequently leading to the great man offering McLaughlin a place in his groundbreaking fusion ensemble of the late 60s / early 70s, “Extrapolation” is a must-have for any modern jazz fan.Joined here by John Surman on baritone sax (!), Tony Oxley on drums and Brian Odgers on string bass, this is McLaughlin’s first effort as a b

OK you need to check that your stereo system is wired correctly for this post if you want to win this competition...Over the years and between bands, McLaughlin has put together some memorable acoustic guitar “happenings” – collaborations that have exclusively resulted in live performances (no studio recordings) with several other wonderful guitarists, namely Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell and Pa
