When the Coltrane Quartet performed in clubs, on certain tunes, when the intensity got to a particularly high level, pianist McCoy Tyner would lay out and let the rest of the unit fly by themselves. As the energy built further, bassist Jimmy Garrison would lay out also, leaving Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones to do a saxophone/drums duel for several minutes. anyone who likes music should own some Coltrane.
how's that for a definitive absolute statement?
(impulse! records is one of the Verve Music Group labels and Impulse! is the "house that trane built" so technically i have a work related vested interest in promoting Coltrane. my real vested interest is to get you to hear the most amazing music that influenced everyone who came after him.)
