When the Coltrane Quartet performed in clubs, on certain tunes, when the intensity got to a particularly high level, pianist McCoy Tyner would lay out and let the rest of the unit fly by themselves. As the energy built further, bassist Jimmy Garrison would lay out also, leaving Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones to do a saxophone/drums duel for several minutes.
