AMG Review of Too Marvelous for Words
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideJimmy Raney, who would eventually settle in Europe, made his first trip overseas in 1954 on a Billie Holiday tour. For this superior LP, Raney teams up with an all-star sextet filled with top European players including up-and-coming tenor saxophonist Bobby Jaspar, trumpeter Roger Guerin and pianist Maurice Vandair. With the exception of Raney's "Tres Chouette," the music is comprised of standards, with the highlights including "Dinah," "Love for Sale," "Have You Met Miss Jones" and "Fascinating Rhythm." High-quality, cool-toned bop music that deserves to be fully reissued on CD.
