If, as annotator Tony Middleton claims, this import CD of Jimmie Rodgers recordings contains "twenty-two of his finest," it does not contain any of his best-known songs. In fact, Rodgers' records were as consistent as they were similar, so nearly any randomly chosen batch of them would be pretty good. Compiler Colin Brown, in addition to avoiding obvious choices, has also looked for more unusual ones, so that, for example, he includes Rodgers' duet with Louis Armstrong on "Standin' on the Corner (Blue Yodel No. 9)," as well as both sides of a record featuring Rodgers and the Carter Family in song and conversation. None of these performances is among Rodgers' best, but they don't turn up on disc very often.
