After Sturgell posted TWO items about Hendrix a couple of days ago, I felt the need to follow in his footsteps. This solo, near the end of a so-so one-chord song recorded live at Fillmore East on the last evening of the sixties, hasn't had that many books devoted to it and doesn't have a WTF-meter reading anywhere as high as that of, say, the solo on his hit single "Purple Haze." I'm feeling it's his best work. This stuff is so gritty and nasty and raw and clearly Hendrix at his peak. A buddy just hooked me up with some of it after it stayed stuck in my craw for months. See it all started on this trip to Mexico, but the seed was planted firmly at a super cool bar and gallery outside of Todos Santos as the sun was setting between the cacti and me and some amigos downed fresh chocolate clams and cold pacificos. The most famous of the original three Isle of Wight Festivals ended on this date in 1970. Over the course of three days a crazily diverse who's who of that era's best bands played, including Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, The Doors, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Free, Gilberto Gil, Hawkwind, Jethro Tull, Kris Kristofferson, Moody Blues, Supertramp (!), Sly & the Family Stone, The Who and of course Jimi Hendrix.
