AMG Review of Jackie's Greatest
Steve Leggett
All Music GuideJackie Wilson's immense influence on modern pop and soul isn't always obvious from his studio work, but his dynamic stage presence made a lasting impact on artists like James Brown, Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye. This collection gathers up Wilson's key sides for Brunswick Records in the 1950s and early 1960s, and while the unison choir choruses and massed strings in the arrangements haven't stood the test of time very well, songs like "Lonely Teardrops" (written by a young Berry Gordy), "Baby Workout" and "(Your Love Keeps Liftin' Me) Higher and Higher" are acknowledged classics.
