AMG Review of On with It
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThis forgotten session (organist Jack McDuff's fifth for Prestige as a leader) was not initially released until 1971 and has yet to be reissued on CD. With the exception of "Hey Lawdy Mama" and Ray Charles' "Drown in My Own Tears," the six selections are originals by the leader. In general, with the exception of the ballad "Dink's Dream," the music is essentially bluesy funk with fine tenor solos by Harold Vick (who switches to flute for the ballad), and good backup playing by guitarist Eddie Diehl and drummer Joe Dukes. The results are danceable, yet full of honest feeling and some chance taking within the boundaries of soul-jazz. Pity that the date is so obscure.
