As I write this, I am technically a day late (though by no means a dollar short). February 7, 2008: J Dilla, Jay Dee, would have been 34. Donuts came out on this day in 2006 as well, and I bought it from Amoeba on that very day, completely unaware of what it would do to and for me as a music listener. Late last spring, I traveled westward to give a speech on copyright. It was my first time in the city I visited, which also was home to a music store I've shopped frequently. In iTunes, click on the time heading, choose an arbitrary track length to start from (I started at 15 seconds), and then play through to your shortest track. I did. It was, of course, mostly an unsuccesful timewaste (a kind of sad amalgam of bad skits and crass outtakes from forgotten albums). I had the pleasure of knowing about Dilla from Slum Village. But Donuts is probably the Hip-Hop album of the year, bar none! I celebrate his life through Donuts and The Shining everyday. He was a true inspiration for creativity, and experimentation of sound. I will always be a fan of the great J Dilla. DILLA LIVES!!!

if you're a hip hop fan, (and i've been for a long time) you probably picked up 'donuts' by j dilla earlier this year. the sad thing about him dying of an incurable blood disease the day that this record came out (feb, '06) was that although he's been in the game for years as an in demand producer, 'donuts' were tracks that were this close to being songs. now, what do i mean by that? the tracks were less than a minute and no more than 3 minutes long. the thing about '...
